Resonant Self-Actuation Based on Bistable Microswitching

We present the design, simulation, and characterization of a magnetic shape-memory alloy (MSMA) film actuator that transitions from bistable switching to resonant self-actuation when subjected stationary heat source. The design comprises two Ni-Mn-Ga films 10 µm thickness integrated at front on either side an elastic cantilever moves freely between heatable miniature permanent magnets and, thus, forms microswitch. Switching states is induced by selectively heating MSMA above their Curie temperature Tc. When continuously Tc, exhibits oscillatory motion in with large oscillation stroke frequency range 50–60 Hz due self-actuation. A lumped-element model (LEM) introduced describe coupled thermo-magnetic magneto-mechanical performance actuator. demonstrate this can be used for thermomagnetic energy generation low-grade waste (T < 150 °C) high power output per footprint order 2.3 µW/cm2.
